Dubai, a city known for its awe-inspiring growth and trailblazing spirit, stands as a shining example of how a relentless pursuit of innovation can transform a humble desert backwater into a global hub of trade and tourism. At the heart of this extraordinary transformation lies Dubai's unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and embracing a growth mindset. Sometimes in November 2021, I visited Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port to see BOXBAY. BoxBay is the world’s first container High Bay Store (HBS) system being piloted by the leading enabler of global trade, DP World. It is the next big thing to happen to logistics and supply chain as it sets to revolutionize ports and terminals operation.
Having undergone successful testing, this innovative container handling system not only makes stacking and accessing of containers easier, energy saving and efficient, it solves the challenges of unavailability of enough space for container stacking and reshuffling of containers which slows down operation. Like a bookshelf, BoxBay stacks hundreds of containers up to eleven stories high on a steel frame and gives access to each container directly on both sides without having to move others like the conventional way. It is fully automated and increases productivity; it has 300% more capacity than traditional container yards.
With the making of BoxBay, DP World further cements itself as the leading provider of smart logistics solutions, enabling the flow of trade across the globe. Seeing DP World’s drive for innovation and learning of its formation, it is safe to say that it shares in Dubai’s growth mindset. The mindset which His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, and Ruler of the Emirate of Dubai said he consciously instilled in his team.
This mindset is not that of the gazelle waking in the morning to outrun the fastest lion so to not be killed or a lion outrunning the slowest gazelle so to not be starved but you getting up to outrun yourself at rising of the sun, faster than you did yesterday. The mindset of you picking the baton from where you placed it yesterday, setting the benchmark, defining your own target and surpassing it.
The growth mindset drives the ruler(s) of Dubai to develop innovative solutions and build the city to become a place of pride. It has not only spurred revolutionary projects like BOXBAY but also transformed the city's entire infrastructure. It turned Mina Jebel Ali, a deserted creek village into the largest man-made harbor in the world, the world’s ninth-largest container port and the largest marine terminal in the Middle East. Dubai's growth mindset extends beyond massive infrastructure projects. It permeates every aspect of the city's growth, cultivating a culture that encourages entrepreneurs, innovators, and forward-thinkers to dream big and push boundaries. Dubai has emerged as a startup incubator, a hub for technological innovation, and a living laboratory for ground-breaking ideas.
Dubai’s growth mindset is one I live by daily because it drives one to achieve what is professedly impossible and you know it, there is no impossibility to what people with vision, foresight and drive can achieve. This mindset makes me strive to be the best at what I do and jolts me daily to move the needle to stitch my garment of greatness. Though sometimes exhausted physically and mentally, it keeps me in the race for excellence that has no finish line.
